Spain qualifies for the 2027 World Cup

The Spanish national team beat Iceland 1-6 with goals from Vicky López, who scored a brace, Edna Imade, Salma Paralluelo, Claudia Pina, and Aitana Bonmatí. Sonia Bermúdez's side will play in their fourth World Cup after finishing first in Group 3 and securing their ticket directly.

With the same starting XI as against England, the Spanish national team took to the pitch with the firm intention of securing their ticket to the next World Cup. Sonia Bermúdez’s side started the stronger of the two, controlling possession and creating significant danger in attack. Vicky López attempted a cross into the box, and it was the Vallecas-born player herself who broke the deadlock five minutes into the match, capitalising on a magnificent pass from Alexia Putellas that left her completely unmarked. Lucía Corrales also tried her luck with a cross into the area, which the visiting goalkeeper gathered. Mariona also looked for a second goal, but the clearest chance fell to the head of Patri Guijarro, only for the visiting goalkeeper to claim the ball. The keeper was also a key figure with another great save from Salma Paralluelo. In the 22nd minute, the influential Vicky López tried her luck with a strike.

A secure Cecilia Runarsdottir saved the shot. Mapi León came close to scoring from a direct free-kick, but the visiting defence cleared the ball. The central defender from Zaragoza also came close to doubling the lead with an attempt at an Olympic goal (direct from a corner). Alexia Putellas also went close with a shot that whistled past the post. From the edge of the box, Patri Guijarro had a strike that went over the bar. In the 37th minute, Ona Batlle spotted Edna Imade inside the area. The forward made no mistake to net the second. A third could have come for Salma, but she was unlucky. The forward did, however, extend La Roja's lead before the break after another great pass from Ona Batlle left the Zaragoza-born player completely alone, and she did not forgive. At half-time, Sonia Bermúdez brought on Aitana and Pina to maintain the intensity in attack.

In the second half, the Spanish national team maintained the same script as the first, continuing to create danger. Just five minutes after the restart, Vicky López unleashed a powerful strike to net her brace and leave her mark on the match. For their part, the hosts managed to pull a goal back through Linda Boama, who capitalised on an error by the Spaniards. The Icelandic euphoria was short-lived. Claudia Pina was there to provide the response just a few minutes later—a stunning strike with her left foot from the Barcelona player. Sonia Bermúdez continued to make changes, and the definitive 1-6 was the work of Aitana Bonmatí, who closed out the match to seal Spain's qualification. La Roja will be at the next World Cup, Brazil 2027, the fourth in their history—something unthinkable just a few years ago.
