It wasn't to be for La Roja, who lost at Wembley and remain in second place in their World Cup qualifying group. Before the match kicked off, the English side honoured Mary Earps and Keira Walsh for their 100 international caps. The home side started with immense pressure, and after three minutes of play, Greenwood delivered a corner, and Russo touched the rebound. Lauren Hemp capitalised on the ball to beat Cata Coll and open the scoring. The 62,306 spectators who attended the stadium erupted, and Lauren James had a chance for the second with a shot over the crossbar. Meanwhile, Sonia Bermúdez's side gradually gained ground, and Mariona troubled the English goalkeeper, but Vicky's effort wasn't accurate. Irene Paredes also had a go with a header that went high.

At the other end, Hemp, after a one-two with Bronze, sent the ball against the woodwork. On the half-hour mark, Ona Batlle also tried her luck with a high shot. Keira Walsh countered from the edge of the box, and Russo tried her luck with a shot that went straight into the hands of a confident Cata Coll. La Roja went into half-time trailing, with only one shot on target to their name. After the break, Sonia Bermúdez's side had two very clear chances to score. First, Olga tried her luck with a shot that crashed directly against the crossbar, while Vicky also hit the post after a good one-two with Ona Batlle. The English tried on the counter-attack with two great moves from Russo and James, but neither of the two attackers was fortunate, and their shots went wide.

Minutes passed, and neither Vicky, with a left-footed shot, nor Irene Paredes, with a header, managed to score. Sonia Bermúdez opted for Salma Paralluelo to enter the field of play, but the Aragonese player couldn't get past the home defence. Neither did Lucía Corrales and Edna Imade, although the Bayern forward had two very clear headed chances, but in the first she lacked power, and in the second she was met by Hampton, who prevented the goal with a providential save. With nine minutes remaining, Patri Guijarro left injured. Clara Serrajordi came on in her place. The final minutes belonged to Spain, who tried, but without managing to find the longed-for goal. With the final whistle, La Roja's defeat was confirmed. They will host Ukraine on Saturday, April 18th, at 4:00 PM at the Nuevo Arcángel in Córdoba.
