“This is recognition not just for me individually, but for the collective. I’ve had a good year thanks to my teammates and the work of the whole squad. In the end, I’ve been able to bring out my best qualities. It’s also really special that it’s from EA SPORTS because I used to play the game when I was little,” admits Paula Fernández (San Fruitós de Bages, 1 July 1999) after receiving the award from content creator Atiga Suleiman as one of the four midfielders in the EA SPORTS ‘Team Of The Season’ in Liga F Moeve. An achievement that symbolises her great season at Real Sociedad, with 3 goals and 4 assists in 2,258 minutes across 27 league matches as a txuri-urdin. The Catalan midfielder has been key in the middle of the park in helping the Basque side qualify for next season’s Champions League in her first year wearing the San Sebastián club’s shirt.

The midfielder, who shares the midfield in the ‘Team Of The Season’ with Caroline Weir, Alexia Putellas and Fiamma Benítez, started playing football at the age of four for her school team. She then went through the youth ranks at FC Barcelona, the club where she developed, followed by spells at Málaga, Rayo Vallecano and Levante UD. “I didn’t want to leave Levante because they were three very good years, and I started enjoying my football again,” says Paula Fernández, who felt very welcomed in San Sebastián because “people here are very warm, and we have young players who help you out. They have made me feel comfortable and, little by little, I’ve been able to show my game.” Precisely at Real Sociedad, the Catalan footballer has found her place in the midfield, becoming an undisputed starter in Arturo Ruiz’s plans. In addition to her goals and assists, the midfielder boasts an 84% pass accuracy rate.

Her statistics in the Basque side’s midfield are rounded off by 4.9 ball recoveries per match and a 64% duel win rate (3.6 per game). The Catalan midfielder has experienced some great moments this season, such as the historic 1-0 victory against FC Barcelona at Zubieta. “It was a match of endurance. As a team, we knew how to stay together and we took the chance we had,” she recalls. However, the turning point for the San Sebastián players came in January. “When you start, you don’t know what the team’s objective is, but from January onwards we saw we had a considerable advantage and those matches were really beautiful,” remembers Paula Fernández, a cornerstone of Real Sociedad and now also of the EA SPORTS ‘Team Of The Season’ thanks to a magnificent campaign full of goals, assists, great football and European qualification.
