Martina Fernández returns to FC Barcelona
The Catalan club has officially announced the return of Martina Fernández. The Catalan central defender, who has signed a deal until 2029, returns to her former home following a season and a half at Everton. Last term, she made 22 appearances in the Women's Super League totalling 1,951 minutes, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

A return home. FC Barcelona have announced the signing of Martina Fernández (1 October 2004, Ordis) from Everton after the Catalan club triggered the buy-back option they held on the central defender. The new blaugrana player becomes the club's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Renee van Asten (Ajax) and Tyler McCamey (Dallas Trinity), alongside Carla Julià being promoted to the first team. The defender was one of the first players to come through La Masia's women's section after arriving from Girona B. She made her official debut for the team in the 2021/2022 season—specifically on 2 February 2022 in a 1-4 away win against Levante UD, when the defender was just 17 years old.
A milestone that made her the sixth-youngest player in the history of the club to debut for the first team. Two years later, she managed to establish herself in the first team, making a total of 22 appearances, 15 of them in Liga F Moeve. A meniscus injury kept her sidelined for three months, but the centre-back returned even stronger. After half a season on loan at Everton, the defender signed permanently with the English side for the 2025/2026 campaign, though it included a buy-back clause that the club has now exercised this summer. Last season, the centre-back played 1,951 minutes across 22 Women's Super League matches, scoring 2 goals and providing 2 assists, establishing herself as one of the best centre-backs in the entire English championship.
Defensively, the centre-back averaged 5.6 clearances per match, won 43% of her duels, and recorded an 87% passing accuracy per game. At international level, she has represented Spain through the youth ranks, winning the Under-19 European Championship in 2021 and 2023. Furthermore, she made her senior debut on 7 March 2026 in Spain's 1-3 victory over Ukraine in the qualifiers for the 2027 World Cup. The new defender has already joined up for FC Barcelona's pre-season training, which kicked off this Monday, 27 July, with the usual physical and medical tests before stepping back onto the grass to prepare for a new campaign as they look to repeat their quadruple of titles.
