SD Eibar continues to strive for the best possible facilities for its teams. In an institutional event held this Friday, September 18th, at Alto de Mallabia, the Armeros officially inaugurated the Areitio Sports City. The presentation was attended by authorities, sponsors, representatives of the club's social mass, and the media. Liga F was also present with Beatriz Álvarez, president of the institution, and Pablo Viches, CEO of the organisation. Other authorities in attendance included the Lehendakari Imanol Pradales, the First Vice-Lehendakari and Minister of Culture and Linguistic Policy, Ibone Bengoetxea, the Deputy General of Gipuzkoa, Eider Mendoza, the mayors of Mallabia and Eibar, the president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas, and the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Rafael Louzán.
This new infrastructure marks a new milestone in the history of the Eibar club, centralising its entire sporting structure in a single space designed for performance, training, and long-term growth for the first time. Covering eleven hectares, Areitio integrates the men's first team, women's football, and all youth academy teams, consolidating itself as the entity's new operational hub. During her speech, the president of SD Eibar, Amaia Gorostiza, was precise about the project: "We are not inaugurating a stadium today. Ipurua has been our home for almost eighty years, and it will continue to be. But what we are inaugurating today is something different, and in a way, more profound: the place where this club is forged, from the first ball a boy or girl touches at eight years old, to the last training session before a match for any other category."
The complex features five football pitches, a building with a stand seating 1,620 spectators, and a high-performance building specifically for professional football. The Armeros' president placed the new facility within the club's historical context, recalling that Sociedad Deportiva Eibar had never had its own space until now: from the first match played in 1914 at the Otaola Erdikoa field, through over forty years of grassroots football on the Chancha Zelay esplanade, to the opening of Unbe in 1997 and the eleven years of first-team training at Atxabalpe, loaned by the Arrasate City Council between 2014 and 2025. "One hundred and twelve years after that first match, eighty-six years after the founding of this club, today we can say, for the first time, that Eibar has a place that is its own," she stated. She also pointed out that Areitio "does not belong to a board, nor to a legislature, nor to a mandate."
The High-Performance Building
The new high-performance building, designed by the engineering firm KREAN, is specifically conceived to meet the needs of professional football and optimise the first team's daily work. With a constructed area of 3,000 m² and three floors, the building connects directly to the training grounds and organises its spaces to ensure comfort and enhance sporting performance. The basement houses areas for exclusive team use, including changing rooms, a gym, a hydrotherapy zone, physiotherapy rooms, recovery spaces, and equipment and clothing storage. The semi-basement floor contains the building's sports and operational area, with offices, meeting rooms, a dining room, a kitchen, and a terrace. The ground floor integrates the club's press room and communications area, which has undergone structural transformation.
