Barça's European masterclass to remain leaders
FC Barcelona secured an 8-0 victory away to Køge on matchday three of the Champions League league phase. Before kick-off, the players from both sides observed a minute's silence following the tragic accident in Urda (Toledo). Pere Romeu's side hunted for the opening goal from the outset, and after twelve minutes, Jereko brought down Claudia Pina inside the box. Her teammate Graham Hansen—making her 100th appearance in the Champions League—broke the deadlock. The Norwegian tried her luck again, first from a free-kick, and later with a solo run that struck the post. Meanwhile, Køge posed little threat to a secure Cata Coll. Just past the half-hour mark, Claudia Pina picked out Ewa Pajor, allowing the striker to double the lead on the scoreboard to 2-0. Furthermore, Cata Coll produced one of the highlights of the first half with a Cruyff turn past the opposition forward outside her penalty area.
After the restart, the rout by the Catalan side resumed. Just nine minutes into the second half, Esmee Brugts capitalised on a cross from Sydney Schertenleib to net the third, before Patri Guijarro joined the Blaugrana party with a clever backheel finish from inside the box to make it four. The fifth bore the signature of Clara Serrajordi, who unleashed a powerful strike from outside the area. Pere Romeu, celebrating his 100th victory as coach of the Azulgrana, made changes, but the players maintained the exact same hunger. Kika Nazareth wasted no time getting on the scoresheet with a first-time finish, whilst Claudia Pina—named Player of the Match—capped off her stellar performance with a brace, rounding off her final goal with a work of art after leaving her markers behind.
