A new success for Aitana Bonmatí (Sant Pere de Ribes, 25 February 1993). The midfielder for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team has been nominated for the Laureus World Sports Awards, considered the Oscars of sport. The Spain international is one of the candidates in the 'Sportswoman of the Year' category and will compete for the award against five other nominees: Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (US sprinter), Faith Kipyegon (Kenyan athlete), Katie Ledecky (US swimmer), Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (US sprinter), and Aryna Sabalenka (Belarusian tennis player). The Catalan player already won the award in 2024, the same year the Spanish national team won the 'Team of the Year' award.

The player from Sant Pere de Ribes, nominated in the same category for the third consecutive year, would add the trophy to her list of individual accolades. Aitana Bonmatí, who is currently injured, has already won three Ballon d'Or awards (2023, 2024, and 2025), and three FIFA The Best Awards (2023, 2024, and 2025), in addition to being named the best player of the last European Championship. She is one of four Spanish athletes nominated, alongside tennis player Carlos Alcaraz and rider Marc Márquez, both nominated for 'Sportsman of the Year', and trail runner Kilian Jornet, who could win the 'Action Sportsperson of the Year' award. The winners will be announced on Monday, 20 April, at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid.
